I Watched Him Die

This is not a poem but a reflection.
I don’t know if anyone has experienced this.
I pray no one really ever has to.
I saw the breath of life leave my dad.
My dad had always been a hard worker all his life
He worked two or three jobs all his life
He also always found the time to help others
He was a giver and not taker
He had a massive heart attack at age 79
only a few weeks before his 80 birthday
He was taken to a hospital only a few
minutes from where I worked
He was put into a coma so he would not
remove life support
Each time I went to see him all I could do
was talk to him with no response
At the end of the week I went to
intensive care to see him
When I entered the nurse said
we took him off support
Which I thought was good
In the next breath she said
He has about 1/2 hour to live
You can imagine all the thoughts
that went through my mind as I
sat there seeing his breathing lessen
and his blood pressure dropping
His pastor was there also and said
that my dad asked that the 23 rd Psalm
be red and after the last verse
He stopped breathing
The feelings that he would not have had
any family with him at death and I was
able to be there gave me some comfort
and I hope him also
dad is gone and my heart hurts
but I am glad I was able to be with him at death

I saw a TV show tonight where a woman had to decide
to have her mom taken off life support and stay till
she died.-Needless to say what that did to me
Made me write this

God Bless you Dad
