Under the spreading chestnut tree
The huge bulldozer stands
The demolition team awaits
To remove it where it stands
This tree a hundred years ago
Was planted from a blowing seed
And this fine tree stood fine until
The developer conceived
Yes he conceived a center where
All shopping could be done
And now this tree must be destroyed
So shoppers can have fun
No thought’s have been given
Of memories, a hundred years have made
How many picnics and pictures taken
In front of this old tree we want saved
And memories of proposals made
Beneath this fine old tree
No the dozer’s waiting to bring it down
But a prostest has been made you see
To save this tree who’s served this town
With memories that it made
So pray my friend we’ll find a way
So this fine tree will be saved
This is not really about any specific tree
it just came to mind when I saw a stately
old tree being cut down.
